JOHN MAHAMA’S ROTTEN RECORD: NDC MEMBERS GRUMBLE AS FORMER PRESIDENT STAYS SILENT ON CORRUPTION

the debate on the 2019 Afrobarometer report on corruption perception rages, Daily Statesman sources in the opposition National Democratic Congress say many key members of the party are worried about the inability of their presidential candidate “to frontally join the corruption debate as President Akufo-Addo has been forcefully defending his incorruptible credentials”.

“Since Mahama was returned as our presidential candidate for the 2020 general elections, all of us expected him to lead the debate on corruption, especially when President Akufo-Addo comes in to defend his fight against corruption, instead of leaving that work for Asiedu Nketiah and others to do,” a source in the NDC said.

“The obvious impression he is giving us and Ghanaians in general is that he is scared of his own record of corruption while in government.
“Don’t forget we were kicked out of office mainly because Mahama had been tagged as the most corrupt President ever in the history of the country,” the source said.

GBA call to arms
Addressing the opening ceremony of the conference of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) in Takoradi on 9 September, President Akufo-Addo touted the achievements of his government in the fight against corruption.

He particularly cited how institutions have been resourced and empowered to lead the fight, recalling the open admission by the Auditor General that the Audit Service has never been as well resourced as now.

Indeed, this has been confirmed by the latest Afrobarometer report on corruption perception, which says institutions of state, for the first time in the history of Ghana, have moved in to fight corruption effectively.

The President further used the GBA platform to reiterate his own “incorruptible” character, insisting that he did not come into public life to “enrich [himself]”.

Lost opportunity
Worried NDC members believe President Akufo-Addo “has opened up the opportunity for Mahama to also join the debate on corruption”.

“While Nana Akufo-Addo tactically used a legal platform to defend his government in the tricky case, he left a yawning gap which John Mahama could have utilised for political profit.
“Mahama has lost a great opportunity to speak to the nation and frontally tell Ghanaians how he intends to fight the canker. He should have been part of the … GBA platform to deal a punch,” our source said.

He added: “Is it because John Mahama has a horrible record as a former president of the Republic of Ghana in terms of corruption? It appears that is the case, and that is why he is running away from addressing a press conference to answer questions from the Ghanaian media, especially on issues of corruption.”

No cheap talk
“And even though it is said that ‘talk is cheap’, it appears that in this particular instance, talk has not proven to be cheap for Mahama, as it often happens over discussions concerning Free SHS or the banking crisis,” another source said.

According to our source, many NDC members are worried that “our presidential candidate continues to run away from frontally positioning his talk in a manner that will convince Ghanaians that he has a better alternative and working plan, particularly in the fight against corruption”.

Tainted?
The Daily Statesman’s source says many NDC members are now worried that “running mate” Johnson Asiedu Nketiah “has been left alone doing all the defending and attacking, through the arduous task of addressing all press conferences, because our national chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, has become a lame duck over issues with the police [Criminal Investigation Department]”.

According to our source, “The embarrassing inability of Mahama to speak to the issues publicly is telling on the party and reducing the credibility of our campaign messages in the rural areas.”

The NDC is also said to be worried “because Mahama’s silence in the corruption debate appears to confirm the impression that the real face of the party is tainted and lacks credibility”.

Botched stunt
“In fact, many of us in the NDC were worried a month ago when John Mahama made a big nuisance and laughing stock of himself in allowing the likes of Stan Dogbe to arrange for him to have a meaningless press conference on social media.
“If he knows that he is without blemish, why did he supposedly encounter faceless people on social media, when he could have spoken to media persons face to face here in Ghana?” the source asked.
